Maier Farms, LLC, Becomes Water Quality Certified

Maier Farms, LLC, operated by fourth-generation farmer Andy Maier, his wife Stephanie, their children, and his parents, Rick and Peggy Maier, recently achieved water quality certification through the Minnesota Agricultural Water Quality Certification Program (MAWQCP). This decade-old voluntary program certifies producers who use conservation-minded practices to protect water quality by requiring an in-depth examination of field characteristics, crop rotation, tillage, nutrient management, and pesticide management techniques, depending on the operation.

“I look at the certification as another milestone of our farm’s history,” Maier explained. “The process helps improve your operation and knowledge as a farmer.”

Maier Farms, LLC, a family operation that began in 1926, manages a diversified crop rotation within the Red River Valley, just outside of Barnesville, Minnesota. The crops in the rotation include corn, soybeans, sugar beets, wheat, and sunflowers, which are raised across 5,000 acres each season. Maier’s operation focuses on utilizing conservation tillage and cover crops to prevent the wind erosion that is prevalent within the region. Field windbreaks and grass filter strips are also present on numerous parcels to help prevent erosion and its effects.

Conservation tillage is any form of tillage where 30% or more of the soil is covered with crop residue, whereas cover crops are non-cash crops grown for the enrichment and protection of the soil surface. In conjunction, these two conservation practices increase soil organic matter, improve soil structure, and reduce soil erosion, thereby protecting the surrounding water quality.

In the future, the family hopes to incorporate more strip-till passes (a practice that minimizes tillage by only disturbing the portion of soil needed to sow seeds) throughout the operation based on the trial runs they are currently undertaking. The family farm also wants to expand its cover crop program by inter-seeding covers into existing crop canopies to address the lack of residue cover after wheat and sugar beet harvests, as well as ongoing weed pressure.

Overall, due to the implementation of best management practices by the Maier family, Maier Farms, LLC, officially became a certified water quality producer on October 7, 2025.

“For me, the certification sign itself does not matter,” Maier explained. “But going through the certification process and learning how to improve our farming practices while hearing how similar farms are successfully operating by using conservation practices—that made this certification worthwhile for our operation.”
