Local Conservationists Honored at State Soil and Water Conservation District Convention
December 20, 2024 by Alyson Levig
Conservation practices are increasing across Minnesota to protect the land and waters, and those leading the efforts on their land were recognized recently at the state level.
In December, Brad and MaryDee Kempe were honored as outstanding conservationist(s) at the annual meeting of the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (MASWCD). They were selected by the Wadena Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) for the award.
MASWCD hosted its convention December 3-4, 2024, in Bloomington, Minn.
Each year, the state's SWCDs recognize individuals and organizations for outstanding accomplishments in implementing conservation practices and improving Minnesota's natural resources. The award program is supported by The Farmer magazine.
Anne Oldakowski, assistant manager of the Wadena SWCD, said Brad was recognized for a variety of conservation practices. Some of those achievements include upgrading their irrigation system to a low-pressure system and using a new pumping plant to increase their water use efficiency.
Brad is the third generation to farm their land which was first established by his grandfather in 1946. The Kempes have implemented a conservation crop rotation and utilized irrigation water management services within their corn and soybean rotation on their farm since 2008 with the assistance of the local Wadena Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and SWCD.
"We're proud of Brad and what he has done for conservation in Wadena County," said Oldakowski. “The Kempes provide a wonderful example for conservationists by displaying their goal of protecting their land for future generations with each conservation practice they adopt."
