Did You Know... Minnesota Has 81 Major Watersheds Throughout the State?
November 5, 2024 by Nicole Lundeen
A watershed is an area of land that channels rainfall and snowmelt to streams, rivers, and lakes. Watersheds are important because they supply drinking water, support ecosystems, and regulate climate.
By 2025, all 81 major watersheds in Minnesota will have a One Watershed, One Plan (1W1P). One Watershed, One Plan is a program sponsored by the Board of Water and Soil Resources for locals to write a 10-year water plan based on these watershed boundaries. This 10-year water plan states quantifiable goals and summarizes existing scientific data about the water resources within the watershed. Local staff use this water plan to implement projects to improve water quality.
